As we pray with each in and out breath and welcome the beautiful seasons of the year, I wanted to discuss the canonization of Dorothy Day, as seen from the perspective of James Douglass, author of “JFK: And The Unspeakable.”
I wrote to him and asked him whether the Roman Catholic Church plans to canonize Dorothy Day, founder of The Catholic Worker in
America.
He said it would be helpful to have Dorothy Day canonized as a Saint because she would be known more widely as a result, and DESERVES to be known widely, so that “others can realize God’s Will as Dorothy did.”
He said that she strenuously objected to being canonized, to be identified as a saint, because she thought she’d be easily dismissed that way.
Then he said, “She’d be more tolerant of a process that might actually help people discover God’s revolution in this world as she did,”
I loved this part: “Dorthy inspired many people to what they would consider miracles in their own lives, because she saw God’s awesome possibilities within them. A phrase she often used in speaking of someone was, “He (or she) is a wonder!”
“When a person knew that Dorothy saw that power or possibility in you- which was, of course, true- pushed you beyond your own poor sense of self to miraculous steps forward. That’s why she was, in fact, a saint.”
Dorothy Day One said “We all have a duty to delight.” Dorothy rejected the “one false step God” and embraced the “no matter what-ness of God,” which all true saints embrace.
Does this mean all of us are saints who embody the no matter whatness of God? Is this the true revolution waiting to happen?
I am thinking about these possibilities, today. How can we support those around us so that they can feel God’s will because of the Love we beam their way? As we give the liberation of unconditional love, acceptance and tolerance to people, the (I Love You) no matter what gift to all we meet, best exemplified by Canine Consciousness, we are free.
That’s all there is to it.
